Romancing the Stars: Are You Astrologically Compatible with Your Mate?

By Dr. Craig Martin

One of the things astrology can tell us is love compatibility. Now, compatibility doesn’t always equal love, but love without compatibility is a rough ride. When we can find someone we’re compatible with and then discover there’s love also, it’s the best scenario possible.

Astrology is elemental. That means each of the 12 signs are connected to one of the natural elements: Fire, Air, Water and Earth. The Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and are strongly associated with passion, motivation and creativity. The Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, and represent the mind. They are the communicators, thinkers and socializers of the zodiac. The Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, and are emotional, sensitive and empathic. And the Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, which are connected to reliability, practicality and tangible results.

Many people are curious about which sign is best for them. If they are Leo, they want to know if dating a Gemini is a good match – which by the way, it is. And likewise, the same Leo wants to know if dating a Scorpio is as bad as they say – and it is!

But there is one problem with creating these broad brushstrokes and generalities. Some Leos are less fiery than others. You see, charts are complicated, and astrological information is based on more than just your Sun sign. It might be better to view ourselves in an elemental way. A more basic approach to our personality can give us a more accurate insight into who we are most compatible with in the astrological world.

For instance, if you are Leo and you fit into that category of Fire type personality, then you are strong, bold, outgoing and creative – the life of the party for sure! Strongly Fire people are most compatible with either another Fire type or Air. However, let’s say that you are a Fire sign, but you’re more of the emotional, sensitive and empathetic type of person. That would mean you have more Water in your chart and you might identify more closely with Water signs. In this example, our Fire type person would be more compatible with Water or Earth.

But let’s make it really simple. Fire and Air are compatible, and Water and Earth are compatible. Also, each element is compatible with other people of the same element – like Earth and Earth or Air and Air. The trick is knowing which elemental style you are, and most people can make an accurate assessment of their type. Once you know your element, you can figure out what style of person you will have the most compatibility with overall.

Don’t get me wrong – some Leos make it work with some Scorpios, and even when the combination is strong Fire and strong Water with potentially a lot of conflict, some couples make it work. But the key is those couples are the exception, not the rule.

Finding love begins best with some amount of friendship, harmony and mutual interest. Those qualities are found most readily when you’re with someone who is elementally compatible to you. Think of it like vinegar and oil or peanut butter and jelly. Those combinations make good bedfellows, while vinegar and peanut butter or oil and jelly – well, you get the idea.

VIDEO: Google’s Zen Master Teaches at the New York Stock Exchange

Chade-Meng Tan, creator of Google’s “Search Inside Yourself” course teaching meditation to more than 1,000 employees so far (with more than 400 on a waiting list) stopped by the New York Stock Exchange recently, joining CNBC’s Tyler Mathisen and Kenny Polcari, director of NYSE floor operations at O’Neil Securities, to offer some quick tips on de-stressing, CNBC reported.

Tan also wrote a New York Times bestselling book, “Search Inside Yourself: The Unexpected Path to Achieving Success, Happiness (And World Peace),” and the overall goal is to teach people how to manage their emotions for better mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.

“The first thing it does, it enables you to calm your mind in a crisis,” Meng said in the report. “It creates a condition for knowledge and self-mastery. It also creates a condition for empathy and compassion. There are people who came to me that say they got promotions because they came to my class, people who say they feel a lot better physically mentally and emotionally and people whose marriage lives are improved.”

Workaholics Sacrifice Physical and Mental Well-being, Study Shows

A new study, “Workaholism and Well-Being,” found a preliminary link between workaholics and reduced physical and mental well-being. In fact, the more money a person makes, the more likely they are to increase time spent at work – creating an unhealthy cycle.

Sarah Asebedo, a Kansas State University doctoral student in the College of Human Ecology’s personal financial planning and conflict resolution program conducted the study with colleagues using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979.

“We found workaholics – defined by those working more than 50 hours per week – were more likely to have reduced physical well-being, measured by skipped meals,” said Asebedo. “Also, we found workaholism was associated with reduced mental well-being as measured by a self-reported depression score.”

To understand why people work overtime even when they know it is not good for their well-being, the researchers used Gary S. Becker’s Theory of the Allocation of Time, a mathematical analysis for choice measuring the cost of time.

“This theory suggests the more money you make, the more likely you are to work more,” Asebedo said. “If you are not engaged in work-related activities, then there is a cost to the alternative way in which time is spent. Even if you understand the negative consequences to workaholism, you may still be likely to continue working because the cost of not doing so becomes greater.”

According to Asebedo, Becker’s theory suggests not only can working more make a person wealthier, but it also creates less leisure time to spend money. As income increases a person may be more likely to work more and create an unhealthy habit.

Data for the study was taken from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 cohort, a nationally representative sample of 12,686 young men and women who were interviewed on an annual basis from 1979 through 1994 and are currently interviewed on a biennial basis.

VIDEO: Jean Houston Joins Deepak Chopra to Teach Master Course “Summoning the Sacred”

This December 11–15 at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, Calif., best-selling authors and spiritual teachers ― Deepak Chopra and Jean Houston ― will lead the “Summoning the Sacred” course, an experiential 4-day course drawing on the power of the world’s wisdom traditions, myths, archetypes, and other timeless tools for creating a life of purpose, joy and true success, according to the Chopra Center.

“In our fast-paced modern lives, many of us are working harder than ever, and even when we achieve a degree of material success, we still may feel a deep void or emptiness – a longing to belong, to create, to express ourselves, to make a difference, and to feel connected to a higher experience of reality or spirituality,” said Chopra. “My colleague Jean Houston and I created the Summoning the Sacred course to help people find a deeper purpose, creativity, joy and peace in their lives through the power of myths. Far from being old tales, myths are the collective story of what our lives mean.”

This December at Summoning the Sacred, participants will:

– Learn archetypes to support and guide them towards actualizing dreams and wishes

– Identify thier own “Hero’s Journey” as a vehicle for personal transformation

– Advance or begin yoga and pranayama (breathing) practices

– Learn or deepen the practice of Primordial Sound Meditation

– Practice a special, chakra-centered yoga designed specifically for the course

-Develop greater awareness, inner peace and balance in life

“As Jean, who is one of the world’s recognized authorities in mythology, says, myths are codes and roads and maps. Where we wind up on life’s journey depends upon the map we carry with us, which is why it’s so important to understand our own myths and personal archetypes – and use them to awaken to deeper meaning and fulfillment,” Chopra said.
