Meditation Shown to Boost Genes that Promote Health

There have been many meditation studies done to document the changes to the brain, but a new study is the first to document gene changes.

“It’s not New Age nonsense,” said Herbert Benson of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He and his colleagues analyzed the gene profiles of 26 volunteers – none of whom regularly meditate – before teaching them a relaxation routine, which included reciting words and breathing exercises, and lasted between 10 and 20 minutes.

After eight weeks of performing the technique daily, the gene profile of each volunteer was analyzed again, and researchers found clusters of important beneficial genes had become more active and harmful ones less so, according to a report in the New Scientist.

The boosted genes had three main beneficial effects: improving the efficiency of mitochondria, the powerhouse of cells; boosting insulin production, which improves control of blood sugar; and preventing the depletion of telomeres, caps on chromosomes that help to keep DNA stable and so prevent cells wearing out and ageing, the report stated.

The clusters of genes that became less active were those governed by a master gene called NF-kappaB, which triggers chronic inflammation leading to diseases including high blood pressure, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease and some cancers.

Additionally, by taking blood immediately before and after performing the technique on a single day, researchers also showed the gene changes happened within minutes.

For comparison, the researchers also took samples from 26 volunteers who practiced relaxation techniques for at least three years, and they had beneficial gene profiles even before performing their routines in the lab. This suggested the techniques resulted in long term changes to their genes.

“It seems fitting that you should see these responses after just 15 to 20 minutes just as, conversely, short periods of stress elevate stress hormones and other physiological effects that are harmful in the long term,” says Julie Brefczynski-Lewis of West Virginia University in Morgantown, who studies the physiological effects of meditation techniques. “I hope to see these results replicated by other groups.”

“We found that the more you do it, the more profound the genomic expression changes,” says Benson. He and his colleagues are now investigating how gene profiles are altered and whether these techniques could ease symptoms in people with high blood pressure, inflammatory bowel disease and multiple myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer.

NAET Holistic Treatment Shown to Relieve Seasonal & Food Allergies

Can a non-invasive, drug-free and natural solution called NAET really get rid of seasonal and food allergies? Discovered by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad, it promises to get rid of the allergies for good, and NAET stands for Nambudripad’s Allergy elimination Techniiques (NAET), according to a report by Salt Lake City Utah’s KUTV Channel 2 News.

The technique uses energy balancing and has been around for 35 years. The idea of treatment is to re-balance the body using its own energy, the report stated. Karyn Maag, a severe allergy sufferer, tried it recently and couldn’t believe how well it worked for her.

“It’s really crazy, but it does work,” she said in the report, explaining after her first treatment she thought the idea was “ridiculous,” but continued to go back because she had not been able to find anything else to help her. She was allergic to vegetables, fruit, wheat, calcium, the sun and so much more, and would even get a rash from touching new clothes while shopping in a store, the report stated.

However, after the NAET treatments she saw almost immediate results. Doctor Gary Olsen, a chiropractor at Pioneer Comprehensive in Draper, Utah, who offers NAET treatments explained in the report that although the treatments seem strange, they are based on Oriental medicine, acupuncture and a mix of western medicine.

On the first appointment, a doctor uses muscle testing to see what a person is allergic to. While holding a vile of the allergen, a person will show weakness in the body if they are allergic. Olsen has been using the technique in his office for the past three years.

“It’s about energy and stopping your body from hyper reacting to an allergen,” he told the news channel.

Patients leave the office with a vile of the substance they are allergic to taped to their leg, and it stays there for 25 hours, giving the body 2 hours to work through the 12 basic meridians that open energy flow, the report stated. At home, the patient stimulates those 12 energy points every two hours while awake, and avoids the allergen.

Olsen said it works in 75 percent to 80 percent of people, and Maag is proof. She no longer suffers from allergies, and her daughter, who also received treatment with NAET, has seen a big improvement in hers as well.

Meditation Improves Focus & Grades in College Students, Research Shows

As reported in the journal, Mindfulness, a study of university students in California found those who practiced meditation scored better on tests, and those who meditated before classes focused better and concentrated longer, the UK Telegraph reported.

With just six minutes of meditation before a test, students showed better results, according to Jared Ramsburg, a University of Illinois doctoral student who co-lead the study. In one experiment, the meditation even predicted which students passed and which students failed the quiz.

The research found meditation training worked better on freshman students, who may have more difficulty concentrating. “This data from this study suggest that meditation may help students who might have trouble paying attention or focusing,” said George Mason University, Virgina, professor Robert Youmans, who co-lead the study with Ramsburg. “Sadly, freshmen classes probably contain more of these types of students than senior courses because student populations who have difficulty self-regulating are also more likely to leave the university.”

Researchers also believe taking long walks in the morning to plan out the day could have the same positive effects as meditation. “Basically, becoming just a little bit more mindful about yourself and your place in the world might have a very important, practical benefit – in this case, doing better in college,” Ramsburg said.

The Law of Attraction: Appreciating the Process of Contrast

When we think about manifesting our dreams, we often get stuck in the emotion of not having what we want. Instead of thinking about what we desire, we are looking at where we are, and we’re angry that we don’t already have what we want. We’re mad we don’t have the job, partner, money, health or whatever else we really, really crave.

What do we do when we are drowning in these emotions, stuck in self-pity, and wondering why the law of attraction is not working for us? We start appreciating the process of contrast.

The process of contrast actually allows us to know what we don’t want. It is then that we can clarify what it is we do want. Sometimes the lessons we learn firsthand are our most powerful lessons. Through our experiences we become very clear about what feels good to us and what doesn’t. We need this contrast to propel us forward.

The Power of Appreciation
We are made to expand, to grow and to seek different experiences. It is part of our nature. The power of appreciating this can change us.

  • Appreciate those who abandoned you for they taught you self-reliance.
  • Appreciate those who betrayed you for they taught you the potency of loyalty.
  • Appreciate those who rejected you for they taught you personal acceptance.
  • Appreciate those who showed you hatred for they have taught you the insight to love.
  • Appreciate those who gave you grief for they have taught you the beauty of joy.
  • Appreciate those who judged you as unworthy because they gave you the capacity to see value in others.

Think of something that happened to you that you believe caused you great harm. Now think of how that situation changed you and how it made you better.

What happens to many of us is we forget to appreciate the process of contrast. We forget the very thing we are experiencing is driving us forward and moving us a new direction. It is expanding who we are.

Many of you today would not be who you are without your contrast. The trick is learning to appreciate the moment of contrast while you are in it. Why? Because it gets you through the moment faster and puts your energy toward what is good.

Practice an Attitude of Gratitude
Do you know what an attitude of gratitude is? It’s where you raise your energy by saying all the things you are thankful for – a rampage of appreciation.

  • Thank you for the sunrise.
  • Thank you for my family.
  • Thank you for the rain.
  • Thank you for my shoes.
  • Thank you that I only have to live today once.
  • Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Who are you saying, “Thank you” too? To your higher power. To yourself. To your family. It doesn’t’ matter. What matters is that you are switching your vibration to a higher level.

When you move your vibration to a higher level, you feel better and you begin to look for the good things occurring. You turn your mind toward what is good and when you do this, you reach more solutions.

The next time you find yourself in a state of not having what you want, remember to appreciate the contrast. The contrast is allowing you to clarify, to define and discover what you truly desire. It is creating a better you.
